About Me

I’m a Kiwi – that’s what New Zealanders call themselves – and this blog is mainly about how I discovered endurance and then discovered i was actually quite good at it!

After having horses and dabbling in various types of riding for many years I did my first Endurance ride on my 38th birthday. I was hooked! This blog is about how my Endurance horses have changed my life, taken me to the other side of the World, to experiences and friends I had never dreamed of.

Come with me and discover how I got there and all the ups and downs along the way that are always part of having horses and learning how to make them into high performance athletes… or at least trying to…

I’m not an expert compared to many but I sure have learnt a lot along the way and continue to do so. So join me as I learn more and get to know me and my crazy horses! One thing I have learnt is that if you want the best from your horses, and you want them to enjoy it too then you have to cater to their whims and idiosyncrasies as well as your own! Opinionated horses care about stuff, and the amount of effort long distances riding requires you need your horse to want to do the job… so don’t squash their passion… and try not to get yourself or your horse hurt along the way…

And the stuff? Well I used to work in an animal behaviour lab for 27 years which was also pretty interesting… and part of that was six weeks in Antarctica!
